Kraken Cove Productions: What's in a Name?
“Hey, Danielle!” someone shouts to me as the crew is busy loading in and setting up for our first shot in the morning. I turn to the person coming towards me with coffee in hand, smiling. “Can I ask you a question? How did you get the name of your company? What does it mean?”
I smile back and ramble out my explanation. The person nods while sipping their coffee (perhaps looking a bit confused), lifts up their mug to salute me, and then goes back to work. Meanwhile, I can’t help but think: wow, I get that question almost once per week. I really need to figure out how to explain my company name more concretely.
This post is dedicated to doing just that so sit back for a moment, sip your coffee, and enjoy my origin story.
It was back in late 2016 when the dream of owning my own production company was finally becoming a reality. The concept of combining my love for photography and video, logistics, and producing all under my own umbrella was beyond appealing. In January 2017, I decided to take the plunge and came up with the name: Kraken Cove Productions.
Landing on this name was an exciting process for me, I am a fan of unique company names and was determined to create my own, so before filing my paperwork, I got to brainstorming.
I’m drawn to animal mascots, and when first conceptualizing I leaned on my astrological sign, Leo. Images of lions floated into my consciousness, but didn’t feel quite right (I couldn’t get the MGM roaring lion out of my head). I then thought of how amazing the octopus is - so smart, clever, flexible, and adaptable. If you’ve seen last year’s Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher, you know the incredible playfulness, intelligence, and resourcefulness of those gorgeous creatures. The octopus can camouflage herself to look like different types of fish, eels, and other sea animals. She can regrow limbs when one is lost. She can walk on land and also live under water. To me, she is magic.
The fact that the octopus also has eight limbs resonates with me as my birthday falls on the eighth day of the eighth month. My connection to the number eight goes even further as each of my names has eight letters.
Fantasy and pirate culture also interest me; which brings in the word Kraken. The fabled Kraken is powerful, not to be messed with, and pops up in mythology across cultures and time. I wanted to combine the octopus and the Kraken in my imagery to connote mightiness, strength, versatility, flexibility, and a little bit of irreverence.
She is not to be underestimated.
